The agreement covers all markets outside of Asia—with the exception of India, which is included alongside Western regions. Crunchyroll has confirmed that the film's title, story details, and release timing remain under wraps.
Shinkai's Next Film Follows Three Major Anime Hits
Although details are scarce, expectations for the project are already high due to Shinkai's recent box-office track record. His 2016 romantic fantasy *Your Name* grossed approximately $358 million worldwide, followed by *Weathering With You* with around $193 million in 2019.
His most recent film, *Suzume*, performed even better, grossing approximately $323 million globally following its 2022 release. Combined, the three films have grossed around $874 million worldwide, cementing Shinkai's status as one of the most commercially successful modern anime filmmakers.
This upcoming film will follow an international distribution strategy similar to that of *Suzume*, which was released theatrically through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures.
Shinkai typically leaves a gap of about three years between his major feature films, but this next project is taking longer to materialize. In January 2026, the filmmaker indicated via a New Year's social media message that he hoped to share more concrete information about the project later in the year.
For now, Crunchyroll and Sony have not announced a title, plot, release date, or theatrical schedule.

Nevertheless, this partnership reinforces Crunchyroll's growing role in bringing Japanese anime films to international cinemas. The company stated that it has distributed 12 of the 20 highest-grossing anime films in U.S. history, further positioning Shinkai's next film as one of its major upcoming theatrical releases.
