The Most Comprehensive List of Fruits Basket Characters, Along with Their Chinese Zodiac Signs

--

RAVE COMIC - Fruits Basket puts a supernatural spin on the Chinese Zodiac through the Sohma family, whose members are bound by a mysterious curse linked to the Zodiac animals.

Those afflicted by the curse transform into their respective animals when embraced by someone of the opposite sex, and their lives are shaped by the Spirit they carry. The curse also connects them to ancient Zodiac mythology in ways that go beyond their transformations.

What makes the Sohma family so fascinating is how closely—or sometimes unexpectedly—their personalities mirror the animals assigned to them. Yuki’s intelligence and skittish nature reflect the Rat, while Hatsuharu’s strength and calm demeanor suit the Ox.

Others, like Ritsu and Kyo, display more complex relationships with their Zodiac identities, making the curse a crucial part of what defines each character. Here is a more detailed look at each Zodiac member and how their animal Spirit influences who they are.

Yuki: The Rat

Yuki is possessed by the Rat, the first Spirit in the Zodiac, and is therefore closest to God in the Zodiac hierarchy. Like the Rat, Yuki is intelligent, agile, and charming, as evidenced by his effortless popularity at school.

Unfortunately, despite his outward appearance, Yuki suffers from very low self-esteem, stemming largely from a difficult childhood. As the first Zodiac member, Yuki excels at almost everything he does—except cooking—and can easily defeat Kyo whenever they duel.

However, Yuki is also quite timid and easily frightened; for instance, he suffers a panic attack after being locked in a dark school closet. All of this makes him a fitting representation of the Rat, as does his enduring rivalry with Kyo.

Hatsuharu: The Ox

Hatsuharu is possessed by the Ox, the second Spirit in the Zodiac, and he fully embodies the physical traits and personality of his animal Spirit. He is as strong as an ox and resembles a cow, with his large, sad eyes and white hair. Hatsuharu has two forms: white and black.

Kisa: The Tiger

Kisa is possessed by the Tiger—the third spirit of the Zodiac—and is as fierce as her animal spirit. At the beginning of the series, Kisa does not speak and bites anyone who tries to get too close to her.

Thanks to the care she receives from Tohru, Hatsuharu, and Yuki, she becomes more open and confident. Kisa is the only Fruits Basket character whose Zodiac sign matches her animal form.

Momiji: The Rabbit

Momiji is possessed by the Rabbit—the fourth spirit of the Zodiac—and is the most cheerful of the Zodiac animals. Momiji is cute and energetic, always bouncing from one moment to the next. He is full of life and vitality, with a youthful and innocent appearance.

Momiji is popular, affectionate, and sincere, as well as one of the most emotionally intelligent members of the Zodiac. His feelings are easily hurt, and he can sometimes be quite childish, yet he is also highly perceptive and able to easily see to the heart of a matter.

All these traits make Momiji a wonderful representative of the Rabbit Zodiac. Momiji’s character arc centers on his growth—symbolized by his rapid physical growth—and his increasing self-confidence.

Hatori: The Dragon

Hatori is possessed by the Dragon—the fifth spirit of the Zodiac—and is as proud and majestic as his traditional Zodiac spirit suggests. Hatori is always calm and composed, possessing a rather serious demeanor.

He is brave, charismatic, and kind-hearted, as evidenced by his role as the Sohma family doctor. Hatori commands a dignified presence and radiates an aura of confidence and authority, yet he is also somewhat sensitive and introspective.

His form may be that of a seahorse, but deep down, he possesses the heart of a true dragon. Hatori’s true form is the sea horse—a creature whose Japanese name translates to "Dragon Child," reflecting the legend that a sea horse living for a full century transforms into a dragon.

While many characters in Fruits Basket possess personalities that contrast with their Zodiac spirits, Hatori’s nature aligns perfectly with the dragon. His seriousness and wisdom, combined with a sharp intellect, make him a fitting representative for this most renowned of mythical creatures.

Ayame: The Snake

Ayame is possessed by the Snake—the sixth spirit of the Zodiac—and although he can be cunning, he defies the negative stereotypes often associated with the animal. He is charming and sociable, frequently inserting himself into various situations and conversations.

He is also quite generous, as demonstrated when he volunteered to attend Yuki’s parent-teacher conference in place of his parents. Ayame is smarter than he appears—evident in his success as a business owner—and is capable of easily ...garnering sympathy from others.

Far more suited to a boisterous rooster than a cunning snake, Ayame is a figure who prioritizes style and flamboyance. This easily makes him one of the most entertaining characters in the series, as he always seems to be enjoying himself and living life to the fullest, regardless of his curse.

Isuzu (Rin): Horse

Isuzu is possessed by the Horse—the seventh spirit of the Zodiac—and her nature is just as wild and free as her animal spirit. Better known by her nickname, Rin, she is energetic, independent, and impatient, as well as the fastest of all the Zodiac members.

Although Rin is fiercely independent, she is also highly sensitive and slow to trust others, as evidenced by her initial skepticism and wariness toward Tohru. Due to her traumatic past, her loyalty and respect must be earned, but once won, she proves to be a steadfast friend.

Much like Hiro, Rin’s independence contrasts with her Zodiac animal, the horse. While horses prefer to stay in herds for protection against predators, the many traumatic events in Rin’s life have made her skeptical of others, even when they approach her with good intentions.

Hiro: Sheep/Goat

Hiro is possessed by the Sheep—the eighth spirit of the Zodiac—and is stubborn, quick-tempered, and clever. Although he is somewhat shy around strangers and deeply kind to those he cares about—such as his mother and Kisa—he is not exactly gentle.

Early in the series, Hiro is known for his sharp tongue and wit, mercilessly mocking Tohru for her open and sincere nature. He is also rather stubborn and headstrong, but over time, he grows into a more trusting and compassionate person.

Unlike his Zodiac animal, the sheep, Hiro is far from a follower and possesses an independent nature. His character development centers largely on his earnestness and his desire to grow up. Hiro truly hated the part of himself that vented anger on others—viewing it as an immature habit—yet he could not help himself when the opportunity arose.
